Two AcDec teams advance to national competition

Two NISD Academic Decathlon teams placed at the state level in two different state competitions and are heading to the national competition. 

Warren High School placed second in the Thomas E. Moseley State Finals from among the top 40 performing schools in the large school category. 

Health Careers High School finished in 2nd place in the Frisco Invitational competition and will advance to Nationals in Division 4 (for small/medium schools).

For the first time in school history, Warren High School placed 2nd overall at the State Finals and now advances to the national competition. The team, who received over $11,000 in scholarships, also won first place in the Super Quiz Relay. 

Individual winners include:

  • Fiona Martinez who received a bronze medal in art, and Social science in the honors division
  • Elias Rodriguez who received a gold medal in music in the honors division.
  • Aryanna Ordonez who received a silver medal in art, and bronze in science in the honors division.
  • Michael Padilla who received a silver medal in art, literature, and a bronze medal in economics in the scholastic division.
  • Mars Bayona who received a silver medal in economics, science, interview, and a bronze in art in the varsity division.
  • Trent Arce, in the varsity division, who received silver medal in economics and a gold medal in the following events: literature, mathematics, music, science, social science, and essay.
  • Mars Bayona placed 2nd highest varsity student in the state of Texas and will receive a $1,500 scholarship
  • Trent Arce placed 1st highest Varsity in the state of Texas and will receive a $2,000 scholarship

Frisco Invitational at Collin College

Health Careers, O'Connor, and Clark high schools participated in the Texas Academic Decathlon state meet in Frisco.

Health Careers High School finished in 2nd place and will advance to Nationals in Division 4 (for small/medium schools) in Pittsburgh, PA on April 25-27. Each member of the team received a $450 scholarship and students earned nine individual medals.  Additionally, Health Careers placed 2nd in Super Quiz.

O'Connor High School finished in 17th place. Jason Chapman, a junior at O’Connor, placed first overall in the Honors division (with the highest score of the meet) and won gold medals in music and science; a silver medal in economics; and a bronze medal in art.

Clark High School finished in 23rd place with students Zach Grotewold receiving a bronze medal in art, and Marina Martinez receiving a gold medal in speech.
